In 2004, the Colombian Congress declared it a cultural symbol of the nation. The sombrero vueltiao has been in Colombia for centuries, and it has many more years of history ahead of it.
Origin in the Zenú community
The sombrero vueltiao originated among the Zenú indigenous people, who inhabited the savannas of Córdoba and Sucre, on the Colombian Caribbean coast. The raw material is caña flecha (Gynerium sagittatum), a plant that grows on the banks of rivers in that region. Artisans cut, dry, and dye it by hand before beginning to braid. A high-quality hat can take weeks of work.
The secret of the vueltas (turns)
Not all sombrero vueltiao hats are the same. Quality is measured by the number of vueltas:
- 15 vueltas: everyday hat, durable weave.
- 19 vueltas: the most popular, perfect balance between quality and price.
- 21 vueltas or more: very fine weave, almost transparent. Collector's items.
The more vueltas, the finer the weave and the higher the value.
How to recognize an authentic one
A genuine sombrero vueltiao has a black and white design created by the natural combination of undyed caña flecha and dyed caña. The pattern is not painted: it is woven into the very structure of the hat. If, upon close inspection, you see that the colors are part of the braiding, it is a sign of authenticity.
More than an accessory
The sombrero vueltiao is a symbol of Colombian identity. Wearing it is a cultural statement. And buying it is supporting the artisan families of Córdoba and Sucre who have been preserving this tradition for generations.
